CIPA will be hosting a lunch roundtable discussion on careers in the United Nations with Dr. Ignacio Armillas, former Director of UN-HABITAT for the Asia-Pacific.

Dr. Armillas is the former director at the United Nations Centre for Human Settlement, in charge of the Office for the Asia-Pacific Region located in Fukuoka, Japan. During his 25-year career with the United Nations, Dr. Armillas has held several other positions including Project Manager of a Technical Cooperation Project in Latin America, Chief of the Administration Division, Senior Officer and Advisor in the Office of the Executive Director, and Coordinator of the Technical Cooperation Unit for Asia and the Pacific.

Dr. Armillas took early retirement in 2000. Since then, he has served as a Visiting Scholar at the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs (2000-2003 and 2006-present); and as a consultant to various organizations including the Inter-American Development Bank (organizing a workshop on semi-aerobic landfills in Mexico with Japanese experts), the Mexican Consulting Firm SUME (on disaster mitigation in secondary cities in Mexico), and the Autonomous Metropolitan University of Mexico at Xochimilco (preparing a catalogue of wet-land agriculture in the southern part of the Valley of Mexico - an area designated part of the Worlds Cultural Heritage by UNESCO and that is under threat by the expanding city).

Originally from Mexico City, Dr. Armillas earned a B.A. degree in Design Science from Southern Illinois University, an M.A. in Housing and Design from Cornell University, and an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning and Development from Columbia University.
