Life at Cornell...
Cornell is one of America’s great private and public universities — a member of the Ivy League, a world leader in research and teaching, and the land-grant institution of New York State. Today Cornell continues to live up to the vision of Ezra Cornell, who hoped to found "an institution where any person can find instruction in any study." He would probably be astounded to see that his university’s course catalog now lists more than 4,000 courses, offered in scores of departments and interdisciplinary programs.
Cornell, combining the prestige of the Ivy League with the great democratic spirit of a public university, is widely respected for its graduate and professional programs. Nearly more than 19,000 students are enrolled in seven undergraduate and four graduate and professional schools. Students, faculty, and staff, a populace of about 28,500 from more than 130 countries, form a truly global community.
On campus. . .
The campus itself, on a hill overlooking the largest of upstate New York’s Finger Lakes, Cayuga Lake, is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. With its 745 contiguous acres set among gorges, woods, gardens, and fields, and its nearly 3,000 acres of natural areas, most of them close by, it provides ample opportunity for exploration, exercise, recreation, and meditation.
. . . and off
The university is intimately connected with Ithaca’s vibrant, politically active community. A peaceful, friendly college town with the cultural resources of larger cities, Ithaca is home to an extraordinary number of restaurants, cafés, and bookshops, as well as a lively independent film and theatre scene. Off campus as well as on, lectures and readings span the gamut of today’s thought in the sciences and humanities, in business administration, labor relations, and politics.
The Finger Lakes region is known for its dramatic state parks and waterfalls, ski slopes, and hiking and biking trails, as well as for opportunities for sailing, swimming, and other outdoor pursuits. In addition, it’s in the heart of Finger Lakes wine country, with wineries, now numbering over 70, lauded for their excellent Rieslings, Cabernet Francs, Pinot Noirs, and ice wines.
